Tihar is one of the most popular festival in Nepal. It is celebrated by the followers of Vedic Sanatan Hindu religion. It is celebrated for 5 days. It is normally celebrated on the month of Karthik . Tihar is also known as Deepavali and festival of lights . It is called as Diwali in India . People of Nepal celebrate Tihar with great joy and happiness.

Kaag Tihar

Tihar is celebrated for 5 days. The first day is called as Kaag Tihar. Crow is called as kaag in Nepali . Crow is very special on this day. Crow is believed to be the messenger of God Yamraj also known as god of death. The cawing of crow is associated with negative aspects of life like sadness and grief. People on this day give grains , seeds and sweets to crow to eat. For this , people place these things on the roof of the house, yard of house or streets in city areas. The crow is worshipped with due respect.

Kukur Tihar

The second day of delighted festival Tihar is called Kukur Tihar. On this very special day, all dogs are worshipped either pets or strays. On this day, dogs are given delicious food to eat. Dog is also called the messenger of God Yamraj . Tika is put on the forehead of a dog and the garland of marigold is hung on the neck. Kukur Tihar also signifies the relation between human and dog.

Gai Tihar And Laxmi puja

The third day of Tihar is called Gai Tihar and Lakshmi Puja . Cow is called gai in Nepali. Nepalese worship cow for various reasons. Cow is worshipped as goddess Lakshmi . People use colors to make cow look beautiful. The old ropes are replaced with new ones . The cow is given special treats to eat . Cow is a simple animal that does not harm anyone. It gives us milk , urine and cow dung. We use milk for making curd and cheese. We use cow dung for making fertilizers. Cow urine has very good impact on our health. Cow is worshipped with great respect.

On this day goddess Lakshmi is also worshipped . She is considered as goddess of wealth and prosperity. People burn diyo on the gateway of the home and on the windowsills . Colourful lights are used around houses to make the house with full of lights and more colourful . People also play Bhailo and Deusi. They sing and dance on the same day going home to home for entertainment. Fireworks are also seen on this day.

Govardhan Puja and Mha puja

The fourth day of Tihar is called Govardhan puja and Mha Puja. On this day Ox is worshipped . It is given sweets and treats to eat. The pile of cow dung is made and worshipped. The Ox is known for providing manual labour. Ox is very important for farmers in our country . Mha puja is celebrated by Newar community . In Mha puja, the self and the Soul within is worshipped.

Bhai Tika

The fifth day is called Bhai Tika. On this day, the powerful Bond between brother and sister is reflected to the world . This tradition started when Yamuna worshipped her brother with garland and Holy water and oil. In this day, sisters give delicious food to their brothers to eat. Brothers also offer gifts to sister.
